The programmer-analyst is involved in the design and analysis of Information Systems. He or she will participate in both systems analysis and applications programming. The programmer-analyst is also responsible for research, planning and coordination of software systems development by a team handling and writing code for systems to suit organisational requirements.
The programmer-analyst must be familiar with development models which streamline the development process. It would be the responsibility of the programmer-analyst to adopt the most appropriate one for any particular project. Sometimes a combination of the models may be more suitable. The programmer-analyst should be familiar with models such as: waterfall model, spiral model, rapid prototyping methodologies, iterative and incremental development, agile development and code and fix development.
The programmer-analyst is responsible for translating requirements into a useable program. He or she will partake in the whole development process while liaising with other programmers via designing, planning, and development of a programme to satisfy the requirements of users. He or she will plan and implement solutions for effective development of a programme in order to meet specifications and deadlines.
The ability to plan a systems flow from scratch and application of logic is crucial. It is imperative that the programmer-analyst have organisational skills and the ability to modify set plans to accommodate shifts in flow. Flexibility and adaptability are paramount and the programmer-analyst must be able to organise groups of programmers and technicians to meet development deadlines. Testing and ironing out programming bugs is also integral for the role. Overall, the ability to manage time, resources and labour, coupled with intrinsic knowledge with the whole process of programming and software development are important requirements of the programmer-analyst.
Training and Education Requirements
The programmer-analyst must be well versed in contemporary programming languages including PHP, in any others would be advantageous. And, must be able to translate user requests and write them into technical specifications. System management skills are also important since the programmer-analyst will be personally in charge of development and testing of systems and their respective programmes. The programmer-analyst will also need good interpersonal skills since he or she will be spearheading the coordination with other developers. Knowledge in Business Management is also necessary in order to implement models to reduce cost and finish the project to meet expectations.
Solid experience and in-depth understanding of SugarCRM, MySQL, Moodle and LAMP system architecture, would be highly advantageous.
