A well-established short-term insurance company has an exciting opportunity in our Johannesburg office for a qualified actuary (FASSA, FIA or FFA) to head up the actuarial pricing function. This key role is visible at a senior management and executive level and reports directly to the Chief Underwriting Officer with a matrix report to the Chief Pricing Actuary of Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). The successful candidate will be expected to build strong ties with senior management, and will act as actuarial business partner to the Heads of Personal Lines, Commercial Lines, Global Corporate segment and various Specialist Lines to develop effective premium rating structures and strategies. They will also support and influence the pricing and portfolio management decisions of the Market Facing and Technical Underwriting functions. The CPA is responsible for the development of rating tools and models, and to support the pricing of new and renewal business. The role requires previous management experience and the ability to develop professional teams. There are up to 10 actuarial staff reporting into this role. Experience, qualities and knowledge • Eight or more years of actuarial experience in a short-term insurance environment • Experience in multiple functions (pricing, reserving, capital) preferred • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across functions and influence outside of own function • Exhibits self-motivation and drive; takes initiative without the need for approval • Professional, enthusiastic and positive attitude • Proven ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure • Experience of providing actuarial advice to senior management • Experience in managing a team of actuarial professionals • Experience at prioritising, resourcing and planning • Ability to see the big picture • Proven ability to handle complexity, distil and explain key concepts • Proactively seeks opportunities to showcase ideas beyond their specific personal accountabilities • Effective communication, presentation and interpersonal skills • Knowledge of actuarial professional guidance and relevant legislation • Knowledge of actuarial pricing techniques and methodology; ability to apply this knowledge to diverse situations • Knowledge of the insurance industry’s trends, directions, major issues, regulatory considerations and trendsetters • Interviewing, appraisal techniques/processes and performance development management.
